I paid a visit to the shops today for my weekly shop and fancied one of my favorite smoothies and look what I found on top of it!

I'm having this!

This little hat is part of Sainsbury's and Innocent's charity campaign to support Help the Aged and Age Concern 35p of the price of your Innocent product will go to these charities and you can only get them in Sainsburys. So get yourself down there and buy a tweet hat... I mean innocent smoothie!

And I shall be the envy of all my friends!

There may be a lot of tweets with little hats this year and I intend to dust off my needles in time for next years knit-a-thon! So much fun... and it's very very cute!

Keeping it real...

Well last weeks mammoth post kinda knocked me out so if you are waiting for part 2 of Tips I'm afraid this isn't it! But worry ye not there will be another tips soon... when I have recovered. In the mean times I thought I'd share my real bird tweets with you.

The punks all wanted to be photographed together so puffin posed with blackbird and magpie so they didn't feel left out!

And my brand new kingfisher demanded a close up too!

We're heading down to a gallery today to see if the nice people there would like to stock them and just in cases I thought a family portrait might be in order. The tweets will be in the shop as usual and we'll see what the real world makes of my real bird tweets!

Tips and Tricks for Playing The Etsy Game

As you may or may not know I recently hit 300 sales and had a big party to celebrate (I made a cuppa and had some cake!) While touting my celebration giveaway BenMcfuzzylugs of the NFEST needlefelters team suggested I do a blog post with a little advice on how to get 300 sales. I can't pretend I am an expert, I'm more a trial and error person than a make a plan and stick to it gal but I shall have a go anyway.
Please remember that I am NOT an expert and my advice and tips are opinion, not necessarily fact but I can tell you what worked for me and the best advice I have been given. So here goes:

Getting Started
It can be quite hard getting those first few sales, if you haven't done it already pay a visit to the Storque and check out the seller handbook this is always my first stop before posting in forums with queries it saves a lot of time and you'll probably just get linked back there anyway.

It's worth visting the storque on a weekly basis, subscribing to etsy mails and keeping tabs with what's happening in Etsy's world... and it's fun!

Don't... get involved ina B&R (buy and replace) unless you are doing it for fun. B&R's can be fun you buy something and your name is added to a list in place of the shop you bought from, it's not a garenteed sale tho. Although it is useful for newbies trying to get a bit of feedback on their profile.

Join a Forum, Join a TeamThe hardest thing I have found being a lonely craftsperson is the isolation, when you find yourself talking to the kettle it's time to join a team. Etsy's Teams Homepage is your first stop where you'll find lots of teams worth joining. I'm a member of NFEST with my felt shops, it's good to touch base, find out what your peers are up to and find items for themed treasuries. It's also important to realise you're not alone, we all have off days and need support.

I also spend a large amount of time in the UK forum for cake chat, UK treasuries, sillyness and generally lovely people who help keep me sane. I occassionally venture into the other forums, etc for sillyness and promos for promotional opportunities. I may not post an awful lot but I do lurk around Site Help for interesting topics.

The Best Advertising is Free Advertising
(but cheap advertising is good too!)

The best promotional opportunities are the free ones, and the cheap ones... and there are plenty about. A front page, gift guide or storque feature can send your veiws thru the roof and also accumulate a few of those pesky sales. getting featured is a tricky business, I was lucky enough to be in Voter (I came 2nd to House of Mouse in the Wedding cake topper vote) which really boosted my sales and my confidence. See the storque for info on votes, you can nominate people on storque whenever the call for nominations is up. Only nominate yourself if it's appropriate tho if not nominate one of your favorites, share the love!

Treasury and T'west are member curated and you get the opportunity to be on front page if the Etsy Admins deem the treasury to be of high enough quality. The best way to get featured is to make sure your photos are of good quality, invest in a decent photo editing suite (I use photoshop elements, it's easy to use and relatively cheap), crop your images square. This is where your team helps too, teams are lovely people and will feature you in treasuries if you are lucky!
Project wonderful is something I was introduced to by AliBali, it's well worth checking out and you can find good places to advertise for a small fee. Make you ad and bid on advertising boxes on othe people blogs. I'm just finding my feet with this one so I'll let you know how it goes.

Pimp yourself, if not you who else? And Big up your friends, mention them on your blog... not got a blog get a blog and mention them there, rave to complete strangers about how great etsy is. Rave about how great you are, cos you are!

Twitter, Facebook, Blogs

Are all free and if you play the game right a good source of advertising. My personal facebook is just for friends but I do have a fan page here. Twitter has been a surprising source of advertising and sales for me so here are a few tips which I have found helpful:

Be Nice - reply to your twitter friends if they retweet/mention/follow friday you
Twitter Lots and Often- and not just links to your shop! Twitter other people's work, things you like, blog posts, interesting and funny stuff. There's nothing more boring than opening twitter to find you twitter stream full of links to the same thing.
Tag your links - #myetsy, you might get a gift guide feature, but use it wisely. I'm sure if you do that with your entire inventory the etsy gods will not smile favorably on you!
Unfollow the spammers!- Just cos you have 10million followers doesn't mean you'll get sales, I don't need to get breast implants, lose weight on the wonder plan or see celebrities in the buff! 1 genuine follower is worth more that 1 million spammers. And you twitter stream looks prettier for it!
Do follow other etsians, crafters, comedians, people who interest you. I took some advice when I first started twitter and joined a follow back scheme. All I got was boring spam. Yawn! Your twittering should be targeted... a guy who sells unicycle insurance isn't gonna be interested in my birds why should I be interested in him?
Advertise your Twitter- I have links to my twitter on my blog, just one click away from here!

Again, remember this is just my opinion but I feel these are social networking sites, so be social. I enquired on a forum thread about Twitter if I should have a personal one to follow my favorite comedians, actors, tv shows etc... the reply was "Don't, I am far too busy to follow socially!"... too busy to read 140 letters from Stephen Fry... Never!

The Best Piece of Advice I was Ever given

Change the Product!!!
This piece of advice is brought to you by the film KinkyBoots and the book Craft and Art: The Business. I started out making bags and purses, I sold a few but after a while I stopped enjoying it, it wasn't fun and it showed in my work and my shop. I was playing with needlefelt but didn't think it was good enough but i loved it so I thought what the heck... I opened The Felt Menagerie in February 2008 and it has been very very good to me...

Of course it's not an easy decision to make but I sat down and analysed why I wasn't selling... I was active in forums, listing regularly but I was working in a market that was already flooded with similar items for cheaper prices. I wasn't willing to drop my prices so I set out to find a more unique product and developed Tweets, they have changed and evolved over the last 18 months but these little birdies have been a great success!

List Often and Lots
Join a forum, join a team
UK sellers stay up and list after midnight to better catch the US crowd
Twitter It!
Facebook It
Analyse What You are doing (there will be a future blog post about this)
Make a business plan but keep it fluid, things change, plans change and a rigid plan is a hinderance rather than a boon
Have fun
Love What you do

I hope this post has at least given someone somewhere one idea or inspiration, as a final thought remember it's your passion that drives your business so use it, love what you do.

It's here!!! Brand new shop!

So a whole day of photographing and scanning and tearing my hair out and it's finally done. Inkmeup has arrived, I'm off to curl up with a brandy now! But I'll leave you with a few samples of what's to come.

The shops a little empty but I shall be filling it slowly but surely over the next few weeks, keep an eye out for opening bargains and all items have free secondary postage which means if you buy 2 or more items you only pay postage on one.

I had my first sale already which elicited a rather uncalled for swear word from my surprised mouth! So that's made me happy today, hopefully things will continue in the same vein!

Also I got my first etsy treasury for a very long time which I have named Inked in honour of my new shiney shop.

A Little Scanning Madness!

Well the preparations for Inkmeup are continuing, the shop is in place, the policies are all completed, banner, avatar and profile are done... now all I need is stock! Today is a frenzy of scanning, photographing and generally going a bit nuts figuring out postal cost and what to charge for prints!Here are a few teaser pics to wet your appetite... now where did I put that camera again?

Things to do while etsy sleeps...

Waiting for etsy to come back on today so I could answer my convos from last night I did quite a lot! I went to the post office, cleaned the kitchen, photographed some stuff, installed a printer...

...and made cheese scones!

The 300... Blog giveaway

In ancient Sparta 300 scantily clad and over muscled warriors defended thier country against millions of heavily armoured Persians hell bent on taking over thier lands and enslaving thier people... this has nothing to do with the blog post although it did make a rather good film... I say good, I was too distracted by the high volume of man candy on display to pay proper attention.

Anyway I digress.

My point is Feltmeup is edging ever closer to 300 etsy sales... a major land mark! This means there are at least 300 felt creations marching thier way across the globe in a bid for felt dominion.

To mark the occasion I shall be giving a surprise goodie bag to who so ever becomes my 300th sale and as an extra bonus I shall also be giving away a prize of goodie bag plus a creature of choice from either The Felt Menagerie or The Feltanomicon to one lucky winner.

What's In a Name? Suggestions Please...

Thanks to all the lovely comments about my gocco prints I have decided the only thing to do is open a new etsy shop! But it's not so simple as that is it? One can't just willie nillie choose any old name and open an etsy account can you?

This has prompted me to pose the philosophical question of What's In a Name? You see feltmeup is now an established brand... but my new project isn't felt! Notfeltmeupdesigns? Unfelt? A little negative I feel. Printmeup? Printmedown? Print... something. It's very very hard!

Suggestions on a postcard please... or just as a comment... help! I need help... there may even be some printed goodies in it if someone comes up with a name that's and better than my poor choices!

Going Gocco...

My new gocco came in the post last week and I have been itching to try it out. I decided to buy one after the retreat where Gillian aka fabricnation showed me how to use one and I was instantly hooked. My main problem is that I have too many ideas and only limited screens!

It's been a while since I did any artwork so I thought I'd have a go at drawing some of my skull collection since they are so lovely (I know, I'm weird!) I drew out my design onto postcards using riso carbon pens, I usually work in Ink any way and the pens are surprisingly fine and good for drawing with, they gave a really nice quality of line.

I did do a few ink tests on my screen from retreat but since my attention span is kinda short I jumped in straight away making my new screen!

I decided to experiment with different backgrounds and found my self running round the flat looking for interesting things to print on, pastel paper worked very well, in fact everything seemed to work well which must mean this is a fairly easy to use system since I can usually manage to screw up most thing!

My black prints cam out a little splodgey, I have to admit I may have got carried away and over inked my screen or maybe i didn't leave long enough between cleaning and reinking between colours. The black ink seemed to be a little more watery then the others so I know to use less next time.
I really liked my white prints tho and my map prints when I managed to get the ink right. I also experimented with turning the paper to make a larger print which I am happy with.

I also tried a few contact prints from my over inked ones which came up quite nice. So all in all I am very chuffed with my first gocco session, I don't think I'm quite ready to turn my business over to a printing one and am really not sure that any of todays experiments are saleable but it's definately been a good afternoon.

Next time I think I'll play with colour a bit more but I will have to order some first since all my colours that came with the gocco are a little odd! Gocco is great fun but I would recommend buying and sharing with a friend since the initial outlay can be quite high, especially if you're not planning on using your gocco for profit!

Etsy UK Retreat

So I'm back... Ok I was back a couple of weeks ago but have spent the interim period between panicking and working and generally cultivating an air of headless chickeness.UK retreat was fantastic, the venue was amazing... a very posh sixth form college in Escrick, York and it was all organised by the wonderful Tinyisland. All the etsy Lasses are totally lovely in real life (as I suspected!) and I was well impressed with their abilities to craft and drink at the same time to the wee small hours in the morning and then get up 4 hours later and do it all again.

I flexed my teaching muscles with a couple of wee felty workshops.

Debsmuddle made me a little nervous with her tweeting skills.... how good is this guy? He looks like he really wants a hug!
And fabricnation let me and Wildcatdesigns play with her gocco... great fun, so much so that I have had to buy a gocco now... whoops!

This is what Y0omii has to say about her creations. "I like to think that my characters are a combination of the 'cute' and the 'odd' all jumbled together, and thus sometimes refer to my little characters as 'cute oddballs'." I love this wee kitty too... she is called Aika!

Let Me Introduce You To...

This week I thought I'd show you something a little different... it's still felt but it's not needlefelted and it's fab. I'd like to introduce you to Britishcreamtea of etsy, I can't belive how real these little fancy cakes look!

I love BCT's felt food made from recycled materials. Her whole shop has a whiff of nostagia and takes me back to my child hood. I love her seaside rock, ice creams and lollies (popsicles if your from the US) probably because I live at the seaside and I adore the sense of faded seaside glamour that it has here.You just have to love this "99 Ice cream" if you've not come across this before its a whipped icecream in a cone with a chocolate flake in... I'm old enough to remember when 99's cost 99p last time I bought (monday) one it cost me £1.30! Take the time to read BCT's descriptions and you'll learn a lot about these great British treats!

BCT's shop is great... I love the way she photographs her work and I could gush all day about BCT but I won't... I'll have a cheeky little moment for myself and ask you to vote for my wedding cake toppers at etsy voter

Sunday Sunday....

I hate Sundays!

This is not a random "this sunday is rubbish so I hate all sundays!" I actually do hate 'em. Mostly becasue for the last year I have work at the big W every single sunday... I'd very much like a day off now! Sundays are dull... we have few customers and we're pretty much garenteed that no matter how much work we do it won't be good enough for the boss.

I hate this particular sunday because the sun is shining and I have much better things to do with my time! Like make a million of these teeny tweets! My plan is to make one in every colour so I could do without having to work today!

Bank Holiday Fun

So it's bank holiday, I'm a bit cranky and tired cos John snored all night and I needed something to cheer me up! Etsy has been down for up date all morning what's a girl to do?

We recently go some fab stationary and books by Lotta Jansdotter at the bookshop where I languish in book hell as a book minion. They are gorgeous and I am so treating my self to both her books when I make more money. I'd love some of her post it notes but it seems a little indulgent for a gal struggling to pay the rent! (p.s you can get these at Waterstones where I am a book minion!)I decided fun could be had by making my own stamp/lino print... after all I am a fully qualified textile designer and I do have printing experience under my belt!
In traditional textile designer mode the first thing I did was make a mess! Kidding... I made a coffee then I made a mess! I got my lino and lino cutters from ebay (then stuck in a box with a one day I'll get to that gesture) and drew out my image... I then rubbed out my image and redrew it cos everything you print get reversed and I'd forgotten this!

I really enjoyed cutting out my lino... lino cutters are fun but lethal tho no major injuries were incured! I went for a tweet design, I have this thing that I'd love to customise my own stationary for feltmeupdesigns.
Here's the finished stamp, I realised after about 10mins of cutting out the lino around him I could just cut around him with a stanley knife so I did!

I then played around with my stamp stamping and then cutting away more lino where it wasn't right. I had such a fun morning... it was relatively inexpensive and I have a lino stamp I can use forever... or until I break it! It's not perfect but I am very happy with my first attempt and can't wait to try it again. (after I have made a million more birdies!)

After a mental weekend i've had a nice surprise, feltmeup has been featured in Vivalamoda online magazine in an article written by Swirly Arts aka Lynsey of etsy who writes this great blog called CuteableAlso featured are my lovely fellow Etsy Uk peeps Moocowhandknits and Claire Payne so its a good day for the uk. It's a lovely well written magazine and I have basically just lost a whole morning reading it!

So I thought I'd introduce you to another needlfelter whose work I admire today. I'd like you to meet ememem of etsy.

I love these bears they look so well made and cute and are wearable too! Look they have clips on the back! I love how they are photographed too... with the bunnies larking about in the background!I was first attracted to this shop when i saw one of these guys on front page of etsy, I love how you are invited to "Browse around, do snow angels, throw handflips and everything! Aand, don't forget to... you know... buy stuff (mumble, mumble)." when you enter this shop! I'm a big fan of snow angels so it's great being given permission to do them in a shop!

This really caught my eye to... the House of Flying Bears Mobile, I can really imagine how long it took to make and the level of work and detail is fantastic. Who can resist ememem's world of whimsey... I can't!

Little things...

As you have all probably come to realise I am easily pleased by shiney things! So when I found these coloured wires while looking for a suitable wire to replace the gold wire which has now gone out of production I was delighted!
My new wires come in many colours so far i have only got red, blue, pink, copper and silver but I'm Sure I'll be getting more soon! Little thngs eh?

Today I want to introduce you to kitlane of etsy, I've been a huge fan of kitlane's work since I joined etsy and I even have some of her Jacabunnies and a Nurblet in my flat so I can really vouch for her high quality workmanship! And she has even staterd doing prints of her work if you are a little cash poor but still want to own a peice of genius!

My little felt empire has been growing ever more rapidly over the last year so I decided it was time to split the good from the evil and open a separate shop for my monters.

"The Feltanomicon!"

A long time ago a man called H.P Lovecraft wrote the Necronomicon, the Book of Dead Names... little did he realise that the book would be transformed into felt by a slightly odd geeky girl in the year 2009. This has all been inspired by my lovely assistant John and his fabulously geeky friends who were the first to request felt Cthulhu's.
I have Snapdragon Bead's alter ego, the Happy Crafter, to thank for the inclusion of keychains in my new store.These little Cthulhu in my pocket mini's are the first of hopefully many. I have so many ideas I need to add another day to the week to be able to make them all!

I've always been a fan of Lovecraft but I never knew how far the cult following went! The shop won't be exclusively Mythosian, there will be aliens, beholders, zombies... you name it... a little pile of cute evil! I am looking forward to attempting a Nyarlethotep tho!
